It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film debuted, establishing Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser avoids is why Woody is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
